What system requirments are needed to work in Photoshop CS without it being slowed by the filters?

Need to upgrade and would love to hear from people that work in Photoshop.
I am using 8 to 10 images at a time along with incorporating the filters as well as channels, layers etc. I really would love to retain alot of history at the same time.
